2008 CECA Annual Conference: Cultural Tourism: Trends and Strategies

ICOM/CECA is holding its next plenary conference in Montréal, Quebec, Canada from Monday, September 29 to Friday, October 3, 2008.

The conference is organized jointly by the Montréal Science Centre and Pointe-à-Callière, the Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History.

Themes and sub-themes

Objectives
* Update knowledge of major cultural and learning travel issues for museums
* Examine current trends and future museum strategies

Main issues
* What challenges do museums face in serving tourists?
* Is cultural and learning travel a new phenomenon, a passing fad or a lasting concept?
* Are tourists customers or visitors?
* How can museums attract and satisfy tourists?
* Can tourists benefit from this kind of learning?
* What are the impacts of cultural tourism for museums?

Trends
* New trends: ecotourism, fair-trade tourism, authentic approach, interactivity, enriching personal experience
* Who are these 21st-century tourists? (their needs and profiles, what kind of experience are they seeking)
* Why are tourists interested in culture and learning?
* Tourists and cultural identity: getting away from clichés, seeing who the Other really is, explaining and promoting the museum’s specific appeal
* Do we all want to attract more tourists? (positive factors, limits and drawbacks)

Strategies for welcoming tourists
* Do we need to adapt learning programs for tourists?
* Are seasonal (temporary) exhibitions a solution during the tourist season?
* When exhibitions fuel tourism
* Cultural activities as a solution for tourists
* Do we need to come up with other experiences specifically geared to tourists?
* School tourism
* Some examples of how university research can help museums
* Learning outside the museum (extra muros and in situ visits)
* What type of partnerships do we need to develop to offer tourists exceptional, memorable and diversified experiences? (customized packages, partnerships, promotions)

Conference fee and registration

There are several options for registration. Depending on the option chosen, the fee includes simultaneous translation, coffee breaks, excursion day, gala dinner and many evening activities.

Early bird general registration is €250 or CAN$350 before April 30 2008.

General registration is €325 or CAN$455 after May 1 2008.

Daily registration fee is €90 or CAN$125.

A special student fee is offered which does not include excursion and Gala dinner.

Refund requests must be received in writing to Christine Dufresne by August 1, 2008. No refunds will be given after that date.

Guidelines for presentations

You have various opportunities to be active participants in the Conference. You could present a research paper (20-minute presentation) or a presentation on the theme (15-minute presentation), contribute to the Market of Ideas (7-minute presentation), make a free session presentation or present a poster in the poster session.

Each kind of presentation has its own particular rules. By following these rules, you will help us prepare the program and determine the appropriate category for considering your proposal. More detail is on the page link below.
